Density is only one NMFC classification factor. Verify the applicable NMFC item before rating or tendering freight.

Quick answer

This tool estimates a density-based freight class. The applicable NMFC item can still produce a different class because handling, stowability and liability also matter.

Core formulaDensity (lb/ft³) = weight (lb) ÷ volume (ft³)

The 2025–2026 NMFC density structure

NMFTA expanded the standard density scale to 13 subprovisions. The current published breaks run from class 400 below 1 lb/ft³ through class 50 at 50 lb/ft³ or greater. Density became a primary classification factor for many items, but it is not the only factor.

This calculator uses those published density breaks to provide a planning estimate. It does not identify an NMFC item number and should not be used as a substitute for ClassIT+ or a carrier classification decision.

Measure the handling unit, not just the product

Use the greatest outside length, width and height of the handling unit as tendered. Include the pallet, crate, packaging and anything that increases the occupied cube. Use the gross weight of the same handling unit. Understating dimensions can make the calculated density look artificially high and the estimated class artificially low.

Why actual freight class can differ

NMFTA notes that handling, stowability and liability can prevent an item from using a full density-based structure. Carrier tariffs and negotiated rules can also matter. Use the result to plan and sense-check an LTL quote, then verify the actual NMFC item and class before tendering freight.

Frequently asked questions

What freight class is 10 lb/ft³?

Under the current standard density scale, density from 10 to less than 12 lb/ft³ maps to class 92.5.

Is freight class based only on density?

No. Density is a primary factor for many items, but handling, stowability, liability and the applicable NMFC item can change the final class.

What dimensions should I use?

Use the greatest outside dimensions of the handling unit as shipped, including pallet or packaging height and any protrusions.

What is the lowest density class?

The standard density scale shown by NMFTA assigns class 400 below 1 lb/ft³ and class 50 at 50 lb/ft³ or greater.
